USAAF - ACME press: P-47 Thunderbolt firing a new rocket, ca. 1944

Image of USAAF - ACME press: P-47 Thunderbolt firing a new rocket, ca. 1944

A remarkable photo of a P-47 Thunderbolt firing a new type of rocket. The "chronophoto" shows various stages of the launch. Of the fifteen shots, the rocket is clearly visible in the last eight. The aesthetic graphic effect of this recording technique is in stark contrast to the violent firepower. The press photo dates from 1944, in the middle of the war. This type of photo is therefore intended to support the morale of the home front and to deter the enemy.

The P-47 Thunderbolt is a World War II-era fighter aircraft produced by the American company Republic Aviation from 1941 through 1945. It was a successful high-altitude fighter, and it also served as the foremost American fighter-bomber in the ground-attack role. Its primary armament was eight .50-caliber machine guns, and it could carry 5-inch rockets or a bomb load.

This silver gelatine print is in used but good condition. A credit stamp and caption is on the verso. Numbered in the lower right corner of the negative "+28396".
