A rare cdv by Pierre Petit of Jaques Babinet wearing his Légion d'Honneur and the medal Sainte-Hélène. You can see them very detailed. He holds a bicorne hat in his right hand. This photograph was also used for several engraved portraits of him.

Babinet was a French physicist, mathematician, and astronomer who is best known for his contributions to optics.
In 1812, J. Babinet entered the École Polytechnique. The following year, he was admitted to the Metz School of Artillery and Engineering. After becoming an artillery officer in 1814, he abandoned his career in arms in 1815.
