Jean Geiser: dead panther, Algeria ca. 1880

Image of Jean Geiser: dead panther, Algeria ca. 1880

A moving photo of a dead panther. The animal lies in a photo studio in front of a painted background. On the backdrop are palm trees, a tent and some people, probably Algerians.

According to a caption accompanying a similar photo, the animal was killed by a settler near the former Isserville, currently the commune of Isser. (See last image for reference)

Jean Théophile Geiser (1848-1923) was born in Switzerland but was professionally active in North Africa. He was working in Algiers, in French Algeria, as a photographer at Alary et Geiser, which would later be called Geiser Frères when he was active in the business together with his brother James Geiser. In 1868 he took sole charge. From 1897 he also started publishing postcards and illustrated books.

Albumen print on original mount, ca. 22 x 28 cm

This photograph is also in the collections of the BnF, Paris. See last image for reference only.
