Henry Frères: Photographie Lunaire, Paris ca. 1890
Large photograph by Paul Henry and Prosper Henry of the surface of the moon.
This albumen print is part of a series about the moon made by Henry Frères on different dates in 1890.
Interesting on this example is the handwritten captions on the mount. Above the print is titled: "Photographie Lunaire .-. Région centrale. 28 Mai 1890 Observatoire de Paris." The lower part gives further details about the moon: "Age de la Lune 2Ho heures". And some technical information about the photographic print: "Agrandissement direct 15 fois." Because the original negative has been enlarged fifteen times, the print is slightly out of focus.
And last but not least the makers are mentioned in a beautiful handwriting: "par M. M.rs Henry."
These French astronomers and optics enthusiasts invented numerous instruments, telescope and camera lenses for the Paris Observatory in order to observe and record distant stars. In 1887 they participated in the development of the photographic map of the skies. (Bernadette Pordoy)
Albumen print ca. 23,5 x 17 cm
Original mount ca. 32,5 x 25 cm
Other examples of this photograph are in the collection of the SFP (Société Français de Photographie) in Paris.
