ABSTRACT
Because much information is lost in history, there are a lot of ‘anonymous’ portraits. We do not know the sitter anymore and even the photographer is almost always unknown.
This article focuses on the rare opportunity of identifying a Napoleonic veteran in a daguerreotype and telling the stories behind this portrait. Finding his relatives and his records in the archive of the Grande armée made it possible to reconstruct a part of his professional and private life.
As a Frenchman born in 1793 and living near Paris he grew up in a very tempestuous era. After his studies he served as a veterinarian in the army of Napoleon.
