Eugène Atget: Rue du Cherche-Midi [37], Paris ca. 1909

Image of Eugène Atget: Rue du Cherche-Midi [37], Paris ca. 1909
Sold out

A representative example of Atget's "Art in old Paris" series.
Here he focussed on the beautiful architectural details of a doorway. This print was part of album "89/33 XVIIIe siècle, style Louis XV, Paris" in the Bibliothèque des Arts décoratifs. See Josiane Sartre: Atget L'art decoratif, p. 214 for more information.

Titled "Le Cherche Midi - Rue du Cherche-Midi [37]" with negative number "5619". There is another, slightly different, version of this image in the collection of BnF, Paris. We can date this one ca. 1909.
Although the reverse of this print is titled by the photographer ‘Le Cherche Midi,’ the image actually shows the doorway of the "hôtel des Conseils de guerre", which was across the street from the Cherche Midi prison. This military prison, which no longer exists today, operated from 1847 to 1950.

Several typical elements are visible in the print: uneven trimmed, clips for holding the negative and numbered in the negative.

Albumen print in good condition. normal traces of use and age. Titled and numbered in pencil on the verso by Atget.

ca. 18,3 x 21,4 cm
