E. Atget: Cour de Rome, rue des Vertus, Paris ca. 1901

Image of E. Atget: Cour de Rome, rue des Vertus, Paris ca. 1901

An excellent and representative example of Atget's "Vieux Paris" series. Photographed at the Cour de Rome in the rue des Vertus, 3rd arrondissement.

Several typical elements of Atget's work are visible in the print: vignetting in the upper corners and clips for holding the negative.
The composition is also typical of Atget's work. The diagonal lines give a lot of depth to the location and draw the viewer's gaze deep into the photo. The large metal wheel probably comes from the metal workshop on the left of the picture.
On the first floor there is a painted advertisement with the text J.B. Garrigue, Acier Poli (polished steel).
An image that would perfectly fit in Atget's album "Ensigns et vieilles boutiques de Paris [Molly Nesbit: Atget's Sven Albums].

Titled and numbered in Atget's hand on the verso. The negative number "4297" can be dated to 1901, probably in June [John Szarkowski: The Work of Atget Volume III, The Ancien Regime]. Albumen print with a good tonality for an Atget.

Albumen print ca. 21,6 x 18 cm

Two other prints of this image are in the collection of the BnF, Bibliothèque nationale de France and in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
