Disdéri: CdV of Ristori in Médée, ca. 1858
A carte de visite made by A.A.E. Disdéri of the famous actress Adelaide Ristori (1822-1906).
The unusual pose is almost cinematic and full of tragedy. Her eyes looking towards heaven. Ristori's style of acting in Médée, according to her own account, was an attempt to preserve "Italian ardor and vivacity" without submitting to academic poses (McCauley, 1985).
Albumen print (CdV) in good condition with photographer's stamp on the back.
