A.A.E. Disdéri: Ristori in Médée, ca. 1858
A carte de visite made by A.A.E. Disdéri of the famous actress Adelaide Ristori (1822-1906).
The unusual pose is almost cinematic and full of tragedy. Ristori's style of acting in Médée, according to her own account, was an attempt to preserve "Italian ardor and vivacity" without submitting to academic poses (McCauley, 1985).
Albumen print (CdV) in very good condition, beautiful tonality.
With photographer's stamp on the back.
