Disdéri: Maréchal de Saint-Jean d'Angély, ca. 1860

Image of Disdéri: Maréchal de Saint-Jean d'Angély, ca. 1860

A strong portrait of the French marshal Auguste Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély (1794-1870).

In 1811 he went to the military school of Saint-Germain, which he left in 1812 to join the 8th regiment of hussars in Russia, as a second lieutenant. He distinguished himself in various encounters, mainly in the Saxon countryside. After the Dublen affair, on October 10, 1813, he was appointed lieutenant and, on December 4, member of the Légion d'Honneur.
He fought at the Battle of Leipzig, after which he became a member of Emperor Napoleon's personal military staff.
On his return from the island of Elba, the emperor attached the young captain to himself as an orderly officer, and raised him to the rank of squadron leader on the day of Waterloo.

The albumen print of this carte de visit is in good condition. Photographer's imprint on the verso. Named in pencil.
