Cornelius Buckley: dock workers at Dublin Port, Ireland ca. 1936

Image of Cornelius Buckley: dock workers at Dublin Port, Ireland ca. 1936

Cornelius Buckley was a member and president of the Photographic Society of Ireland. He was a civil engineer working for the Dublin Port and Docks Board during the 1930s. as he had an office based at the North Wall he was very well placed to record the hustle of dock activity. Most of his photographs are of such and, presumably because he was an engineer, he took a lot of pictures of bridges and cranes.
The photo is a wonderful example of the "new vision" that characterized photography during the interbellum. The extreme camera angle and diagonal composition create a very dynamic image. The man on the left is looking at the camera. His shadow is also a nice element in the whole composition.

Informational paper stickers were later added to the original vintage print.
