Ch. Carey: painting monk with vanitas and crucifix, ca. 1864

Image of Ch. Carey: painting monk with vanitas and crucifix, ca. 1864

A beautiful composition!

This rare Carte de Visite depicts a painting monk near a large crucifix. There is a painting on the easel. At his left hand you can see a vanitas too.

Charles Carey (1824-97) started his photographic work in 1860 until 1878. Between 1862 and 1865 he was associated with Th. Raynard.
We can date this portrait from ca. 1864, both photographers were active at 43, Rue du Bac from 1863 on.

Nice detail: the albumen print is mounted upside down on the cardboard with photographer's address.
Print in good condition. Some small spots on cardboard, not affecting the print.
