BUFA: portrait of a young Zouave, France ca. 1915
A moving portrait of a young man of the French 9th Zouave regiment. He is looking right in the lens of a German photographer. The French North African Zouave RF (République Française) badge is visible on the M26 Adrian helmet. Part of the number "9" is visible on the right collar. The portrait is numbered in the negative, "3803".
This number is also used in the caption on the verso. The text talks about several foreign "types" in the French army. The man is a POW, prisoner of war, from the Battle of Champagne.
From September 25 to October 6 of the year 1915, the regiment was engaged in the Second Battle of Champagne, suffering heavy losses in the face of German counterattacks.
The press photo is published by BUFA, Berliner Union Film Ateliers. BUFA is an iconic film campus overlooking Berlin’s famous Tempelhof airport, with its first studios being built in 1912. With over 100 years of making movies, BUFA has been playing an important role in the production of world class media.
