Atget: Stains, ancien pied-à-terre des ducs d’Orléans, ca 1901
Eugène Atget: Stains, ancien pied-à-terre des ducs d’Orléans, 1901
Entrance in eighteenth-century Roccoco style. These are the remains of the Chateau de la Motte, destroyed on 12 October 1870 during a bombardment in the Franco-Prussian war.
This image is part of the first book about Atget, published three years after his death. The book shows 96 collotypes of Atget's work, selected by Berenice Abbott. This monograph was published simultaneously on the occasion of the first one-man exhibition organized by Levy and Abbott at the Weyhe Gallery in New York. It exists in an English, German and French edition of 1000 copies each. A milestone in the modernist approach to Atget's work. We have the German edition in our collection (Nr. 323/1000).
Albumen print titled and numbered (6207) in pencil by the artist. Some wear and yellowing due to age. The deformation on the corners is because this print was once mounted with the hinge-and-slit system. Typical for the work of Atget. Overall good condition and clear details.
ca. 17 x 22 cm, printed in 1901
Some typical details of Atget's work are presented in this nice photograph. The straight composition, uneven borders and the clips to hold the glass negative.
