Anonyme: Greek funeral mask, collotype ca. 1890

Image of Anonyme: Greek funeral mask, collotype ca. 1890

A very nice collotype (an early form of photolithography) print of a golden Greek funeral mask of a bearded warrior, Mycenae ca. 1500 B.C.. The print is numbered "24" in the lower right corner. Beautifully printed. Only one small dent on the left, not affecting the mask.

Collotype is a gelatin-based photographic printing process invented by Alphonse Poitevin in 1855 to print images in a wide variety of tones without the need for halftone screens. The majority of collotypes were produced between the 1870s and 1920s.
