Adrien Tournachon (dit Nadar Jeune): "Mignonne", horse with his owner, ca. 1860

Image of Adrien Tournachon (dit Nadar Jeune): "Mignonne", horse with his owner, ca. 1860

This salt print was made by Adrien Alban Tournachon (1825-1903) at the 1860 competition for race horses.
Adrien was the younger brother of Félix Tournachon, better known as Nadar. From 1855 he specialized in photographing animals. Princess Mathilde had commissioned him to photograph the award-winning animals of the contests held in Paris. Incredibly precise shots of race horses and their keepers or owners were the result.
This print was also published in a green leather-bound book with black embossed border over front and rear covers. Titled "Race Chevaline. Concours de 1860." in gold leaf on spine. The original book featured 51 mounted prints of racehorses and donkeys at the Universal Agricultural Fair of 1860 held in Paris. Like all other plates this example is accompanied by printed captions detailing each animal’s pedigree, breed, and prize awarded (a complete copy is at the Getty Museum).
