Remembrance card of Flemish SS soldier, collage portrait ca. 1943
This silver gelatine photograph is a collage portrait of A. Michiels. Killed in action in Leningrad, Russia on March 23, 1943. He served as M.G. - gunner in the legion 'Vlaanderen', a local part of the German Waffen SS in Belgium.
Parts of his propagandistic correspondence are printed on the verso. He was born in Lubbeek on Januari 17, 1917. He was 26 when killed.
The composite photo was made to show him in 'his uniform' although there wasn't a good portrait available at that time. You can see a pullover near the collar of the uniform. The cutting edges around his head are clearly visible. Interesting photographic document of WW2 made with "Photoshop avant la lettre".
ca. 10 x 6,5 cm
Small traces of use. Rare.
